CAN YOU HELP?
Can you help?
Our annual festival of wonderful concerts is made possible by a collection of enthusiastic unpaid volunteers, some on the committee with specific roles, such as Chairman, Treasurer, Box Office Manager and IT Manager, some who are not on the Committee but who turn up on concerts days when they can, just to help out in a variety of practical ways.
With Marian Pell retiring as Chairman in 2025, we will need some more people. It does not have to be a huge commitment of time, nor a job for life! Some volunteer roles can be shared by more than one person. And there are benefits – our regular volunteers are entitled to priority booking for seats (and pay slightly less for them) and to join in drinks and nibbles after each performance with the artists.
COMMITTEE ROLES
The committee meets 3 times a year for a couple of hours in Chalfont St Giles, usually in January, April and October. We also have the annual general meeting in February. Committee members discuss the artists for each season and generally contribute ideas for running the concerts. Specific committee roles for which we need help are:
Refreshments and Bar Manager
We need someone to take over organising the bar. This principally involves buying the drinks and setting up and manning the bar (with help) and applying online for the necessary licence.
Administrator
This is a job that can be done completely from home. It ranges from booking the hall and pianos to checking arrangements for artists through their agents and organising concert day duty lists for committee and other volunteers. A full job description is available for anyone interested.
Programme note writer
We also need someone to write programme notes. We produce a couple of sides of A4 with a description of the music being played. This can be a very rewarding role for those who like to delve more deeply into the music, and there are many resources available to assist, from Making Music’s library to our own archive. It does not have to be an academic treatise!
OTHER ROLES
Car Park
We need people to help set up and put away the one way system for the car park in the school playground, as well as people to direct traffic as people arrive. If you fancy yourself in a bright yellow vest directing cars this is for you!
Ad hoc volunteers
We also need helpers for several tasks on concert day, all of which can be shared, so volunteers can decide how much time they can spare on the days that they attend concerts.
Setting up and putting away
If you can help set up the hall and, along with the audience who always rise to the occasion, put it away again, this is a job that can be done in an hour or so on a concert day afternoon and 20 mins after the concert – even less when there are many hands.
