Debussy

Cello Sonata in D minor

Brahms

Sonata for cello and piano No.2 in F major, Op. 99

Our second concert is by the thrilling 2016 BBC Young Musician, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Sheku is already at the age of 18 holding audiences spellbound with his mastery and eloquence, and is accompanied by his sister, the pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason.

Their programme ranges from the 18th to the 20th century. Boccherini was a superb cellist, and chamber music composer.  His six cello sonatas are early, virtuosic, works of which No.6 is unusual in that it was published in several different versions. Boccherini is followed by Brahms’ magnificent second sonata and two French classics, the Poulenc and Debussy cello sonatas.  The Poulenc was played for the first time in the UK at Jordans by Poulenc himself with Pierre Fournier on cello!  Both sonatas are hauntingly beautiful.
