The 2017 season opens with the return of one of the world’s leading pianists, Angela Hewitt, who regularly appears in recital and with major orchestras around the world. Admitted into Gramophone’s Hall of Fame in 2015, Hewitt’s performances and recordings of Bach have drawn particular praise, marking her out as one of the composer's foremost interpreters of our time.

For our opening concert we will be treated to four of the great piano pieces in the classical music repertoire. J. S. Bach’s biographer, J. N. Forkel wrote "Never before had such excellent compositions for the clavier been seen or heard". The Partitas soon gained a reputation for their technical demands, and even now, they are the prerogative of only the greatest of keyboard players. Of the two Beethoven sonatas, the Sonata in C sharp minor, also known as the ‘Moonlight’ sonata, needs no introduction. The first of his superb late piano sonatas, Op. 109 in E major, includes the magnificent and complicated variation movement taking the listener through a range of emotions, ending with serene beauty.
